Here is a link to a great website I found on timber construction. While it might be a promotional pitch for the industry it is still full of great details and is relatively easy to navigate.

There is also a book call 'Measure and Construction of the Japanese Houses' which has lots of great stuff on the way that the Japanese have always designed anthropometricly, and also lots of traditional construction details, floor plans etc. And it's only $25.00 from Readers. Note that it is two chapters from a much larger book called 'The Japanese House: A Tradition for Contemporary Architecture' which I have not seen but I am sure is worth it if you have a larger budget.
Just a quick apology to Hilary who I tried to convince to add a little more space for comfort, obviously I was very wrong...
